The Grand Canal, linking Beijing and Hangzhou has a history of more than 2,400 years. It is the world longest man-made waterway with a length of 1,794km.  It  runs through eight provinces and municipalities and 35 cities.  Its was once an important waterway. The canal in the Jiangsu Province section, running 600km in length, is still in use today. There are many historical and cultural relic sites along the canal.

The first metro line in Hangzhou, 48km long, runs underneath the West Lake, the Qiantang Jiang, the Grand Canal and several railways.  The line can accomodate 48 trains running to ensure a departure every 10 minutes from 6.30am to 8.30pm daily.  Ticket fares vary from 2 to 8 Yuan depending on the distance.  The project is operated by the Hangzhou Metro Group and the Hong Kong-based MTR.  There is plan to expand the metro network to eventually have 10 lines and comprising 40% of the city's public transport.
